What is an Independent film?

  • A film that is produced mostly outside of a major film studio.
  • Less than half of the financing should come from a major studio.
  • Independent films are sometimes distinguishable by their context and style and the way in which you can see the filmmakers' personal artistic vision.
  • Sometimes they are made with considerably lower budgets than major studio films.
  • Generally, the marketing is by limited release designed to build word-of-mouth or to reach small specially audiences.
  • Full-length independent films are of ten showcased at film festivals such as Sundance and Cannes.
  • The camera angles used gives the audience more of a role in the film.
